There are two common concerns regarding linen that we see. One is that linen is high-maintenance and it takes more time and effort to take care of it when compared to cotton or similar natural fabrics. And the second concern is that linen gets unbelievably wrinkly after washing.

While linen does indeed tend to wrinkle, both of these concerns are not completely true. Linen does not require any special treatment like dry cleaning. In fact, taking care of it is easier than it seems. Linen fabric can be washed in a washing machine or hand washed, using regular washing detergent. It even dries faster than most other fabrics!

When it comes to wrinkling, linen may be considered more wrinkly than cotton. However, with proper care, you can easily minimize this. Here are simple care tips to keep your favorite linen pieces smooth.

Proper washing

Similar to cotton, linen should be washed at up to 40oC / 100°F. In case you have heavy staining, you can wash it at 60oC / 140°F, but high temperatures should be an exception and not used constantly as they may harm the fabric or color in the long term. Also, do not overstuff your washing machine as this leads to laundry getting more wrinkly. So leaving more space in the drum is a good idea if you want to minimize wrinkles.

Drying

To avoid bigger wrinkles and to maintain the normal shape of your linen piece, it is best to flat dry it. Arrange your linen on a flat surface and let it dry naturally. When you hang linen on a hanging rack, bigger creases may form in places where the hanging line goes. Also, this may cause linen to stretch as the water travels to the bottom and weighs down the edges of the pieces.

Ironing

Finally, if you want to get rid of even the tiniest wrinkles on your linen shirt or linen tablecloth, you can safely iron your linen pieces. For the best result, iron the pieces while they are still a bit damp.

Pro tip: if you have no problem with smaller wrinkles, but want to get rid of a few bigger ones, place your linen piece on a flat surface, spray it easily with water (best to use a simple spray bottle) and flatten the wrinkles with your hands. Let it dry for a couple of minutes and there you go!
